VIDEO: The Truth About Paint Protection Film

Here is a pop quiz. What is the link between helicopter blades from the Vietnam War area and today’s modern automotive paint protection world? The answer is paint protection film or PPF as most of us know it. This modern, lightweight polyurethane-inspired material was initially developed as a military solution to protect rotor blades on helicopters in the late 1960s.

But like all great inventions, crafty engineers found a way to expand its use, which found a home in the automotive space not too long ago. A paint protection film can be applied to nearly every part of your car’s exterior – even headlight covers.

It helps to protect the surface from scratching, rock chips, and chemical exposure. It’s incredibly durable, and some advanced PPF materials can even heal small scratches in a matter of seconds. There is a lot to love about paint protection films – but also some things to carefully consider. This is what we’ll explain in today’s Ceramic Pro video. Our host Adam Cote is going to get technical and scientific about paint protection film. If you watch the video and are really looking to expand your knowledge, take some time to read our detailed blog on the subject by clicking this link. Video- Benefits of a Nanoceramic Coating

What Are the Benefits of a Nanoceramic Coating?

Applying a coating like Ceramic Pro is a proactive way to protect your vehicle from harmful agents that can damage it, lead to oxidation, corrosion, and eventually the development of rust. Once it’s cured, it provides multiple benefits including the following.

Blocks Chemical Stains

Chemical Stains are both unsightly and quite difficult to remove from a paint surface. With the addition of a nano ceramic coating, your car adds defense against most common chemical stains that otherwise stain unprotected surfaces.

In the event a strong chemical meets a protective coated surface, the coating blocks it in its tracks. This resistant technology helps alleviate costly paint correction procedures and enables otherwise harmful chemicals from penetrating into the clear coat and damaging the beautiful paint that lies underneath the protected surface.

Reduces UV Damage & Oxidation

Preventing UV damage and premature oxidation are ceramic coatings bread and butter. These coatings are specifically formatted to reflect ultraviolet rays and enable the coats to both look better and stay better protected from the harsh rays of the sun.

UV damage typically occurs because of lack of maintenance or upkeep especially in coastal areas that have high salinity in the air. The salt, sun and humidity all contribute to harmful damage over time. However, with the addition of ceramic coatings, the coat acts as an invisible shield between contaminants penetrating to the clear coat.

Improves Cleaning Ability

If you’ve spent long hours meticulously cleaning your Tesla, raise your hand. The ritual of car care is truly an appreciated task that’s embraced by passionate car enthusiasts everyday across the globe. But there comes a time when this process becomes tedious and time-consuming – even if you’ve got a PPF or clear bra installed on your Tesla.

Having a certified Ceramic Pro shop apply a professional ceramic coating on the outside and inside of your Tesla it adds the super hydrophobic effect. This helps to reduce dirt and debris sticking, which reduced cleaning times.

Amplifies Paint Shine

Tesla paint isn’t known for being top-shelf. The application of Ceramic Pro 9H helps to provide added depth to the vehicle’s paint surface. It’s a common myth that ceramic coatings add gloss – but that’s not entirely accurate. It provides added depth – so, a gloss finish appears ‘glossier’ while a matte finish common with several Tesla’s appears ‘more matte’.

The thin layer of transparent glass created by the hardening of Ceramic Pro not only blocks damaging contaminants and amazing resistance to light scratches, but it also amplifies the luster of what’s underneath. This is a major reason why polishing, clay bar treatment, and prep work is required prior to application.

Warranties Documented on CARFAX Vehicle History Report

In 2018, Ceramic Pro collaborated with CARFAX to create the Appearance Protection Reporting service – which documented a Ceramic Pro 9H or KAVACA Paint Protection Film installations based on the package purchased. The service is attached to the vehicle’s VIN – which stays with the CARFAX report through the Telsa’s lifecycle.

At Ceramic Pro, all the ceramic packages are backed by a warranty of at least six months (for introductory packages) all the way to lifetime warranties for Gold packages. This level of confidence in the product exemplifies the difference in protective capabilities over long periods of time. It also improves your Tesla’s resale value – as the warranties are passed along to the new owner.

The CARFAX report will also help you when it’s time for a trade-in.

Video: Paint Protection Film (PPF) VS Ceramic Coating: What's The Difference?

Whether its Ford vs Chevy, In n Out vs Shake Shake, or Yankees vs Red Sox, we all have our favorites and tend to be rather vocal about expressing that preference. This mentality extends into the paint protection world – especially when debating clear bra vs ceramic coatings.

There is no denying the fact that a paint protection film or professional-grade ceramic coating are the two best ways of protecting your ride from exposure to harmful contaminants, UV rays, and even light scratches. But, there are qualities that each delivers that gives it a nudge or a competitive edge over the other.

That’s what Adam Cote is going to explain in today’s Ceramic Pro video. Adam will enter the highly contested world of paint protection by comparing clear bra vs ceramic coatings. He’ll explain the differences between the two, introduce their pros and cons, and more importantly, provide factual information that will help you determine the two – so you can make an informed and logical decision.

This test is useful in evaluating the flexibility of coatings on substrates. Result: 0 mm of coating loss at 180° rotation.

Hardness

In the coating industry a products hardness or ability to resist scratches is determined by the pencil test. In the Pencil test conducted by SGS (JIS K5400) a coated panel is placed on a firm horizontal surface. The pencil is held firmly against the film at a 45° angle (pointed away from the operator) and pushed away from the operator in a 0.256-inch strokes. On a scale ranging from 6B (softest) to 9H (hardest), Strong has been tested and classified above 9H. impact In the Impact resistance testing conducted by SGS (ASTM D2794 test) coatings attached to substrates are subjected to damaging impacts during the manufacture of articles and their use in service. This test method for impact resistance is useful in predicting the performance of organic coatings and their ability to resist cracking caused by impacts. Result: 80/80 inch pounds.

Adhesion

The test conducted by SGS is the ASTM D3359 Adhesion test. This test covers procedures for assessing the adhesion of coating films to metallic substrates by applying and removing pressure-sensitive tape over cuts made in the film. Result: 5B (No coating loss when using strongest tape).

UV Protection

The UV protection keeps paint, rubber and plastic from aging. The tests conducted by SGS; ASTM G154-06 and ASTM D2244 determine color changes on surfaces exposed to UV rays. Result: No color change

Weight

A cured layer of Strong weighs between 0.2 to 1 gram/square foot depending on porousness of the surface.

Hydrophobicity

A surface level of hydrophobia is dependent on the water contact angle of the surface. The higher angle the less dirt or liquid will attach to the surface. Strong 2.0 has a contact angle of at least 110 degrees.

Electrical Resistivity

The coatings ability to conduct electricity in room temperature is extremely low. With higher temperatures the conductivity increases.

Gloss or Color Changes

The coating does not always increase gloss. It preserves the shine of a surface at the time of treatment. Color and shine depend on the surface being treated.

Nontoxic

Ceramic Pro is a non-toxic product and the tests that have been conducted by SGS are: ASTM F963-08 (4,3,5) Heavy Metal Lead, Antimony, Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium, Chromium, Mercury, Selenium. Result: Not detected in all tested substances.
